Pancakes are a favorite treat almost in every family, especially popular
they become seven days before Lent, when everybody is celebrating
Shrovetide (Maslenica) and enjoying pancakes as a symbol of this week.
Running from September 23 to 25 in Ziedonis hall of National
Library of Latvia, Rīga, and Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils the
111th birthday celebrations of admirable artist Mark Rothko will take
place. This project is one of the constituent parts of “Rīga 2014”
events programme “Okeāna alkas” (Longing for the Ocean).

Archaeologists explore a settlement in Vitebsk region
which belongs to the Viking epoch. It is assumed that the site dates back to
the 10-11th century. Several dozens artifacts have been already
found. These are not only household articles, but also various adornments. So,
the participants of the expedition are ready to dig deeper.

of its 1150th anniversary festivities. Participants of the festival will include
enthusiasts from medieval reenactment clubs of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Czech
Republic, Poland, Lithuania, as well as folk craftsmen from Latvia.

The programme will be special this year, because the event is dedicated to 30th anniversary of beginning of struggle against the Soviet plans to build the hydroelectric plant on Daugava river and to drown the Slutišķi and other villages as well as many nature values on river banks. The festival will be introduced by Saint Service in Spruktu Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony (beginning at 10:00), everybody is warmly invited. The programme will continue at 11:30 in Slutišķi village.

On June 4 during the Art Night from 22:00 to 01:00 a series of art
activities „Daugavpils in Light” will take place in Daugavpils Fortress.
In order to see Art to see the magic and secrets of the Art Night each
event participant will receive a special Daugavpils night flashlight in
the Rothko Centre from 22:00.
Every year in June, Daugavpils organises one of the city’s main cultural
events, the Daugavpils City Festival. During the festival, the city’s
birthday is celebrated with an extensive programme of festivities. For a
whole week, in various locations around the city, cultural, sporting,
and recreational events take place, as do markets and activities for
children. During these days, the city becomes a meeting place for
several thousands of people from Latvia and abroad. In 2015, Daugavpils’
740th anniversary will also be celebrated.
The acclaimed pianist and composer Carlos Cipa from Germany shall give one of his three performances in Latvia at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre on April 4, 2014.
